برگزاری نشست اندیشه صلح در تفکر مسیحی آکوئیناس

به گزارش خبرگزاری شبستان، نشست «اندیشه صلح در تفکر مسیحی توماس آکوئیناس» با حضور دکتر گریگوری رایشبرگ (Dr. Gregory M. Reichberg) از موسسه تحقیقات صلح اسلو (PIRO) برگزار می شود.

بر اساس این گزارش، این نشست از ساعت 15 تا 17 عصر روز یکشنبه، یکم شهریور ماه به زبان انگلیسی در موسسه پژوهشی حکمت و فلسفه ایران برگزار می شود.

The Idea of “Peace” in the Christian Thought of Thomas Aquinas

St. Thomas Aquinas (1224/5–1274) is widely considered to be one of the greatest of Christian thinkers. He drew on a variety of philosophical sources, Aristotle most notably, but also from the Muslim thinkers Avicenna and Averroes, as well as the Jewish thinker Maimonides.  Aquinas was one of the earliest practitioners of what today would be called “Abrahamic dialogue.” His most famous work, the Summa theologiae (in English the Summa of Theology or literally “a summation of theology”) continues to be cited in wide variety of disciplines including metaphysics, ethics, law and political theory. Within contemporary philosophy there has lately been much discussion about Aquinas’s ideas concerning natural law, virtue theory, and even just war – the topic of a book I have nearly competed. In writing this book (Just War in the Ethics of Thomas Aquinas to be published in 2016 by Cambridge University Press) it became apparent to me that the idea of just war is dependent upon the more fundamental notion of peace. War cannot be defined without reference to peace, while peace can be understood without reference to war. In fact, within his Summa of Theology Aquinas devoted (part 2-2, question 29) a short section to the notion of peace – its definition, possessors, kinds, zones, and sources. Very little has been written on his treatment of peace – certainly much less than is merited. To fill this lacuna, I have prepared this paper for delivery at the Iranian Institute of Philosophy. My hope is that it can serve as a springboard for dialogue about Muslim and Christian conceptions of peace.
